Consumer Justice Alert: Facebook Marketplace Scammers

TONIGHT ON THE CBS EVENING NEWS. BACK TO YOU. LOOKING FORWARD TO THAT, ANTHONY, THANK YOU. A CONSUMER JUSTICE ALERT TONIGHT ABOUT SCAMMERS ON FACEBOOK MARKETPLACE. OUR KRISTEN SEVERENESS WAS CONTACTED BY A WOMAN WHO FOUND SEVERAL FAKE SELLERS TARGETING BUYERS ON THE SITE. THIS IS MY SHOCKED FACE; RIGHT? SO FACEBOOK MARKETPLACE. I DON’T KNOW IF YOU GUYS ARE FAMILIAR. IT IS KIND OF LIKE CRAIGSLIST. IT ALLOWS YOU TO POST, BUY AND SELL ITEMS TO PEOPLE RIGHT THERE IN YOUR AREA. A NORTH TEXAS WOMAN SAYS SCAMMERS HAVE INFILTRATED THE SITE HOPING TO STEAL YOUR MONEY. IT SEEMED LIKE A REAL GOOD DEAL. Reporter: DONNA SMITH AND HER HUSBAND HEADED TO FACEBOOK MARKETPLACE TO BUY AN RV. WE SAID IT WOULD BE GOOD. WE GO TO FLORIDA EVERY NOW AND THEN. WE MIGHT AS WELL. Reporter: THEY FOUND A 23001 FOR 2500%. SHE MESSAGED THE SELLER ASKING ABOUT THE CHEAP PRICE TAG. I AM TELLING THIS — SELLING THIS RV BECAUSE I AM IN THE MILITARY AND MY UNIT WILL BE SENT OUT OF THE COUNTRY. Reporter: HE SAID SOMEONE FROM FACEBOOK MARKETPLACE WOULD CONTACT HER. AND MARKETPLACE WENT AHEAD AND E-MAILED ME. TURNED AROUND AND SAID THAT WE HAVE TO PURCHASE FIVE GREEN DOT CARDS EITHER THROUGH CVS, WALGREEN’S, CALL THEM AND GIVE THEM THE NUMBERS OFF THE CARDS. Reporter: THE E-MAIL FROM MARKETPLACE WAS CLEARLY A FAKE. AND WHEN DONNA SAID THEY WOULD NOT BE USING GREEN DOT CARDS, THE SELLER WENT SIGH WILL NOT ARE LENT. WE CHECKED MARKETPLACE AGAIN. IT WAS REPOSTED ON THE MARKETPLACE THROUGH ANOTHER SELLER. T♪HEY MESSAGED THE NEW SELLER AND SEVERAL MORE. WE DID THE BLAZER. THEY ALL HAD SLIGHTLY DIFFERENT STORIES ON WHY THEY WERE SELLING THE VEHICLES. MY HUSBAND PASSED AWAY. WE’RE IN VIRGINIA. WE’LL HAVE IT SHIPPED TO YOU. ALL REQUIRED HER TO USE A GREEN DOT CARD. IT IS JUST A BIG SCAM. THERE ARE MORE THAN A COUPLE OF VEHICLES. THERE’S GOT TO BE A COUPLE HUNDRED ON THERE THAT THEY ARE DOING THIS. Reporter: NOW TO AVOID GETTING RIPPED ON MARKETPLACE, REALLY INVESTIGATE THE PROFILE OF THE PERSON SELLING THE ITEM. ASK YOURSELF DOES THE PERSON LIVE IN YOUR AREA? DO THEY HAVE A LOT OF FRIENDS OR JUST A FEW? SCAMMERS EITHER HAVE A FEW FRIENDS OR A LOT OF FRIENDS WITH MADE-UP NAMES? OR DO A QUICK REVERSE IMAGE SEARCH ON THEIR PROFILE PICTURE. IF THE PICTURE COMES UP AS SOMEONE ELSE, YOU KNOW IT IS A SCAMMER. IT IS ALSO VERY EASY TO REPORT

  1. Just had an interaction regarding a golf cart that was priced too low to be true.  The seller used the exact same wording as the email response in this story.  Military seller, must sell by the end of the month, cart was "pristine".  Definitely same crew.
