Have a Fair Trade Halloween

The chocolate you give out at Halloween was
probably produced by child labor. Most of us think of Halloween as a holiday
that’s fun for kids. But there’s a big problem in the conventional
chocolate industry — abusive labor practices. 70% of the world’s chocolate comes from
the West African countries of Ghana and Côte d’Ivoire. Poverty there is getting worse. The average cacao farmer in Côte d’Ivoire
makes just 78c a day. It’s not surprising that some farm owners
seek to reduce labor costs by using young people as workers. But growing and harvesting cacao can be hazardous,
especially for kids and teens. In the worst cases, traffickers transport
people — including children. These kids miss school, go hungry, and are
physically compelled to work. Big chocolate companies already know
this. They’ve been promising to eliminate child
labor for decades, but have missed the deadlines they set for themselves 2005, 2008, and 2010. This year, Hershey’s, Mars and Nestlé were
not able to guarantee that any of their products were free of child labor. If we really want to get rid of child labor
and forced labor in the chocolate industry, we have to be willing to pay farmers fairly. Chocolate is a treat. It should never be cheap. Get the facts, tell your friends and tell
big companies know you’re paying attention. And give out chocolate you can feel good about
this Halloween. Want to learn more? Visit equalexchange.coop at the link below.

  1. First I just want to say I live your company and I love your chocolate
But ….. my family can not afford to buy it all the time, we are paycheck to paycheck and I think it’s difficult for most families to be able to supply what they need for Halloween. We do not personally get trick or treaters.
I will also say this, I have gut issues and your chocolate does not hurt my stomach like all others
You guys truly are great but I’m just saying, for some families they have little to no choice
I hope this changes in the future. ❤️
